DOUG JOHNSTON

Doug Johnston is a basket weaving extrodinare, with his collections lovingly handmade and hand-formed one at a time in his Brooklyn studio.

His collections, whether they be small trivets or large tote bags, all feature the same cotton rope and the same basic coiling process, a simple technique but ridiculously fresh and inspiring. To fully appreciate the delicate and striking beauty of his basketwork, you need to look closely at the materials used. From the untreated, raw cotton that forms the bulk of his baskets to the primary-colored thread that holds them together with a simple zigzag stitch.
